A novel-in-verse about a young girl coming-of-age and stepping out of the shadow of her former best friend. Perfect for readers of Elizabeth Acevedo and Nikki Grimes.
She looks me hard in my eyes
& my knees lock into tree trunks
My eyes don’t dance like my heartbeat racing
They stare straight back hot daggers.
I remember things will never be the same.
     I remember things.
With gritty and heartbreaking honesty, Mahogany L. Browne delivers a novel-in-verse about broken promises, fast rumors, and when growing up means growing apart from your best friend

*MY THOUGHTS*

I don’t always write a review of novels in verse, but when I do it’s because I really enjoyed it. And this is one of those times. It’s different than what I’ve read lately, but I think that’s what I liked about it so much.

This was the story about a good friendship gone sour. From the beginning she’s not really a great friend to her, so the two of them aren’t seen as such. I think that’s what I liked most about this. That sucks to say, but it is. It was really relatable. We have all went through “friendships” like that before, I’m sure. This was hella realistic and it was different to read it from a novel in verse.

As for the characters, of course I didn’t like her old friend. She let stupid stuff get in the middle of their friendship and just left her hanging. But Skyy really grew into her own woman and found out who she was without her. And as a fellow basketball player, I really liked the way the book incorporated it, because dudes aren’t always happy to share their court with a girl. Especially with a girl as skilled as Skyy seemed to be.

This novel in verse is short, but the story packs a big punch. There’s no shortage of feels in this one! Trust me, once you start, you’ll only want to put it down when you’re done!

Overall, I give this
