WoW: The Davenports by Krystal Marquis

This bookish meme tells the blogosphere what we’re waiting patiently (and sometimes not so patiently) for! It’s hosted by Jill over at Breaking the Spine!

A frothy and wise Bridgerton-esque YA romance with an all-Black main cast—the first book in a debut duology, set in turn-of-the-last-century Chicago.

The year is 1910. The Davenports are one of the few Black families of immense wealth and status in the United States, their fortune made through the hard work and entrepreneurship of William Davenport, a formerly enslaved man who founded the Davenport Carriage Company years ago. Now, the Davenports live surrounded by servants, crystal chandeliers, and endless parties. This is the story of the Davenport daughters, their maid, and their best friend—Olivia, Helen, Amy-Rose, and Ruby—as the four find their way, and unexpectedly find love, in a rapidly changing country. Inspired by the real-life story of the C.R. Patterson dynasty, The Davenports offers a glimpse into a period of African-American history often overlooked, while delivering a totally escapist, swoon-worthy read.

Why I’m Waiting: I say this all the time, but I guess it’s worth me saying again. I hate historical fiction because as Black people we are always set in a slave role or in a negative light. So imagine my surprise when I saw this cover, and the synopsis come up on my Twitter timeline. A historical fiction book with Black characters about a real life company that I’ve actually heard of before?! WOW I couldn’t think of anything else besides that to say. And of course besides all that, all I needed to see was “Bridgerton-esque YA romance with an all-Black main cast” and I was already pulling out my wallet. TAKE MY MONEY.

What about you? Will you read this? Do you read historical fiction Why or why not? Let me know in the comments!
