Two for Tuesday: Passing

These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!

Today’s Theme: Passing

Today’s topic is also a bit heavy. In both books there’s a form of passing. One with a character who didn’t want to do it at all, and the other who didn’t even know it was happening. If one is “passing,” it means they are claiming to be a member of one racial group when they are not for some type of gain. Or in one of these cases, there’s something else to it… In The Color of a Lie, it’s 1955 and Calvin’s whole family has just moved to a new city where they’re all light enough to pass for white. They live in a white neighborhood and Calvin attends a white school. But of course, this isn’t safe. Especially when Calvin starts getting more and more uncomfortable with what his dad has made them do….

In the Weight of Blood, it’s a little different. Maddy is being controlled by her dad. She has the a dad who basically is making her do her hair a specific way to make sure it’s never “poofy” and other things like that. It was heartbreaking to see these things happening to her. And I knew that all of that happening would come to a boil…… And it definitely did because those kids were effing terrible. But then we get to the end and she comes into her own. And let me just say….. She was a bad ass and I was very proud of her. But also like scared of her lol

Well, there you go! Here I’m just going to talk about why I grouped these two books together. I hope you enjoyed a look at this small part of the books. For a full synopsis of the book or to add it to your TBR, click the picture and it will take you to their Storygraph. The link on the caption will take you to it’s Goodreads.

Have you read either of these? Will you pick them up? What did you think of them? Let me know in the comments!
