Two for Tuesday: Raising Awareness (for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women)

These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!

This Week’s Theme: Raising Awareness (for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women)

The movement for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women was started because of the alarming amount of missing and murdered Indigenous women across the US and Canada. In both of these books, the author expressed interest in helping to bring awareness to this issue. K.A. Cobell states how important it was for her to use her story to spread awareness for this movement in the author’s note and in the Instructor’s Guide she included. The author uses a mystery/thriller to shed light on the way these women/people go missing. A new girl is recognized at the traditional Blackfeet Giveaway to honor her missing sister. But during the ceremony they realize another girl is missing. When they find her, she’s been killed and now this group of teens are the main suspects. This book took me through the ringer trying to figure out who did it. And I’m going to tell you now, I guessed wrong, and you will too! [This is a YA book!]

In this one, the MMIW movement is front and center because the main character’s mother is one of the missing. This one also has a mystery at the heart of it, but instead of being the one suspected, this main character Wren, is the one who is trying to solve them. It was heart wrenching watching her trying to solve the case of all those animals and solve all these mysteries for other people when she felt like no one was helping to find her mother. I flew through this one and I ended up crying at the end of it. Please check your content warnings with this one before reading tho. [This is a MG book!]
