Two for Tuesday: Impactful Novels in Verse!

These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!

Today’s Theme: Impactful Novels in Verse

It’s National Poetry Month! So obviously I wanted to talk about some novels in verse! But these are more than just novels in verse. These books are sure to leave a lasting impact on the reader. Hannah Sawyerr’s newest features a teen who is dealing with an unexpected and unwanted pregnancy. It’s told through “searing free-verse, journal entries, and interspersed fill-in-the-blank poetry prompts” and y’all KNOW I love me a mixed media type book. I just KNOW this one is going to be on someone’s favorite books of the year. This sounds amazing and just knowing that her first book was a William C Morris Honor book makes me even more excited. (That was from the year that I read like 4 out of 5 of the winner/honor books.) Also, can we talk about this cover? AH-MAZING! [Out 9/23/25!]

I KNOW this one is going to be impactful because of the controversial topic. There’s still some people that think COVID wasn’t real and don’t like that some people are still wearing masks. I’m hoping that this makes people realize that this was an unprecedented time and not all of us experienced it the same. What I like best about this book is the way it shows people from all walks of life. You get different people’s perspectives, including one from jail. I also loved this one because of how different it is from the other novel in verse I chose. This one is basically interconnected stories and the other one is one whole story in verse from one person’s perspective. [Out Now!]

Well, there you go! Here I’m just going to talk about why I grouped these two books together. I hope you enjoyed a look at this small part of the books. For a full synopsis of the book or to add it to your TBR, click the picture and it will take you to their Storygraph. The link on the caption will take you to it’s Goodreads.

What about you? Do you like novels in verse? Have you read either of these? Or will you add them to your TBR? Let me know in the comments!
