These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!
Today’s Theme: Black YA Horror Anthologies!
First off can we talk about this cover?! We could add these two to the list for the covers alone. But for this week’s purpose we’re going to be talking about the anthologies. I don’t know how we went from no Black people in horror to like 6 or 7 plus 2 anthologies over night, but I’ll take it. This one has some of my favorite authors like Kalynn Bayron, Liselle Sambury, and even Ryan Douglass and Joelle Wellington are in it. I can’t wait to read more of this!
See what I mean when I say these books could be on this list for the covers alone? This anthology has Maritza & Maika Moulite, Justina Ireland, and even Vincent Tirado…. All of whom I’ve read something spooky from them and enjoyed it. I’ve only read the Dedication and the Foreword of this one, and it really resonated with me. It mentioned the Black girls who have been “aching” to see themselves in horror. Not only see themselves, but to see us survive. Listennnnn that resonated with me so hard! I was damn near shouting in my living room!
This horror anthology is also coming out, but it’s going to be in the adult section. This also has some more of my fave adult authors in it too! And another difference in this one is the type of horror it is. It’s showing more than just things that go bump in the night. These stories are “exploring not only the terrors of the supernatural but the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our nation.” And Lordt can you really say this isn’t something you’re looking forward to if you like horror and diverse books?!
Well, there you go! Here I’m just going to talk about why I grouped these two three books together. I hope you enjoyed a look at this small part of the books. For a full synopsis of the book or to add it to your TBR, click the picture and it will take you to their Storygraph. The link on the caption will take you to it’s Goodreads.
What about you? Do you like Horror? Anthologies? Which one of these will you add to your TBR? Let me know in the comments!
