These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!
Today’s Theme: Black People at NASA!
Today’s theme is courtesy of the social media trend that’s been going around. NASA released their headshots and some Black people that work there began sharing theirs. The whole thing went viral and I LOVE IT! One of my friends who I went to college with actually was one of them and I thought that was so cool! So I wanted to honor not only them, but other Black people that work at NASA. Both real and fictional lol In this first one, the fake boyfriend is an astronaut. And y’all all of the space puns in just the synopsis alone?! I need this book like yesterday! (Also, it’s set in Houston? BERKLEY PLEASE!)
This one is the true story of four African American mathematicians that worked for NASA before John Glenn went to space or Neil Armstrong was on the moon. They used women like them to calculate the numbers that would do things like launch rockets. They were always looked over until their movie came out in 2017. This book features Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, women who did so much good while facing so much injustice. (Fun Fact, I chose the Young Readers Edition for this book because I actually read this one for a class before I was a librarian lol)
Well, there you go! Here I’m just going to talk about why I grouped these two books together. I hope you enjoyed a look at this small part of the books. For a full synopsis of the book or to add it to your TBR, click the picture and it will take you to their Storygraph. The link on the caption will take you to it’s Goodreads.
Do you think these sound good? Does this topic make you want to add these to your TBR? Will you go pick one up today?! Let me know in the comments!
