One holiday tradition my mom always wanted to do with us but never did is celebrate Kwanzaa. She did educate me on what it is and what everything means, but we never got around to ever doing it. But now that I’m starting my own family, I wanted to do celebrate this year (even if Toddler won’t remember it.) That way we’ll be ready to celebrate it the way we should when Toddler is bigger.
So, for 2024 I decided to celebrate Kwanzaa through literature again. I’ll be listing the principles for each day along with a book that matches the principles. If you can think of other titles that match the principles, tell me, I’d love to discuss.
Day 6 is Kuumba. It means Creativity. The process is much of the same, light the previous candles, and then light the middle green candle. The person who lights it then makes a statement about Creativity. I read that this means to make your community more beautiful than you found it. This year I’m going to focus on my Mind Maps, or my digital reading journals. I keep saying I’m going to make them, but I read SO FAST that I always get behind immediately. This will help me remember things for when it’s time to review them . Also I’m going to do this differently too and make them as I read.
The book I thought about first when thinking of Creativity was:
I chose Church Girl for this one because the MMC is a tattoo artist and the FMC is also an artist. And she basically knocks his socks off when he asked for help on something. And I loved that. And the thing he asked her for help with was 100% left more beautiful than it was before. The concept behind that tattoo was beautiful and even as a Zeta I wished I could have seen it in person.
What about you? What books do you think of when you think of Kuumba or Creativity? Do you think of this one as well? Let me know in the comments!
