For fans of: Feminists, Fierce Females, Contemporary, Friendship Goals, Realistic Fiction, YAFrom the creator of the hit TV series The Bold Type comes an empowering and heartfelt novel about a future female president’s senior year of high school.
Ava, CJ, Jordan, and Martha (listed in alphabetical order out of fairness) have been friends since kindergarten. Now they’re in their senior year, facing their biggest fears about growing up and growing apart. But there’s more than just college on the horizon. One of these girls is destined to become the president of the United States. The mystery, of course, is which girl gets the gig.
Is it Ava, the picture-perfect artist who’s secretly struggling to figure out where she belongs? Or could it be CJ, the one who’s got everything figured out…except how to fix her terrible SAT scores? Maybe it’s Jordan, the group’s resident journalist, who knows she’s ready for more than their small Ohio suburb can offer. And don’t overlook Martha, who will have to overcome all the obstacles that stand in the way of her dreams.
This is the story of four best friends who have one another’s backs through every new love, breakup, stumble, and success–proving that great friendships can help young women achieve anything…even a seat in the Oval Office.
*MY THOUGHTS*
I hadn’t heard much about this one and normally that means it wasn’t very good, so I kind of put it on the back burner. But I was still really curious about the book because the premise is so bomb. And as it turns out, I’m pretty happy my library hold came in and I decided to go with it.
Out of their friend group, every girl, Ava, CJ, Jordan, and Martha has something special about them. They all could grow up and become the next President of the United States. And that’s exactly what one of them does. But who is it? Can you tell just by reading a few pages?
This book worked so well because of the characters. They were all smart and wonderful and each one made the story their own. They each had something to bring to the story. And even though only one of them wins the Presidency, the others all have a huge part in the story and it wouldn’t work without them.
I also liked the way the story was written. I liked that it started out in the future and then goes back to the present. The author gives us some clues and then lets us guess who will become Madam President. It was like a mystery, but not. And since mysteries are my favorite, it was definitely something I liked.
As for the plot, although I liked the way it was written out, I did feel that it was dragging for a bit. Some of the POVs weren’t as engaging as others (in my opinion) and that may be why I felt like it was dragging a bit. That’s the danger of multiple POVs. Not everyone is going to be as interesting.
I was expecting something completely different than this book. In the end, it ended up being really cute! I can’t like, I was really surprised at how much I liked it. But after that ending, I can’t wait to see what else Sarah Watson has in store for these girls!
Did you read this? Do you have this on your TBR? Let me know in the comments!
I had DNFed the book, but was going to try again with the audio. I think I just wasn’t in the right mood at the time, but I did think the intro, in the future, was great, and wanted to find out who “she” was.
