When Paloma’s parents move them from Miami to Los Angeles, she hatches a plan to get her career as a medium up and running: Host seances at her new school and stream on social media Build her profile and make a name for herself Avoid detection from her tattletale of a little sister
But when a reading gone awry leaves Paloma in a sticky situation with a new friend, she’ll need more than a crystal ball to find her way out of this mess.
*MY THOUGHTS*
I swear I didn’t plan this to happen this way, I just got really lucky and the stars aligned enough to give me a Middle Grade Monday post! And it couldn’t have been with a better book! It was so much fun and I really hope it IS a series, so I can get more of Paloma (now that her mom’s secret is out because moms was bugging lol) and more ghosts!
Ok so we’re dropped into a world where Paloma’s family all has special powers. For instance, her grandmother is a famous psychic and she’s determined to follow in her footsteps, her uncles know how to communicate with animals, and so much more! Of course this causes all types of high jinks to start up. And let me tell you, she is no stranger to it. For most of this book, she knew what she was doing, and she did it anyway. But it definitely made for an entertaining story lol
So the cutest/coolest part of this book was the gifts that her family had. I LOVED that she was so proud of what she could do and how she was using it. BUT also, with a gift like that, comes great responsibility lol And of course, she was not responsible. She’s still a tween after all. She was just thinking of the easiest/fastest way to make friends at her new school. And I can’t say I blame her lol But of course that gets cut short when people start using her for a cheap party trick. (And I mean that quite literally) In doing that she opens a portal where all these ghosts start flooding the school. But once it starts happening, Paloma has to find a way to get them all back. By herself. As a tween. Yeahhhhhhh it was not good, but it was so much fun to read lol
The next cool thing about this was the writing style. I felt all the emotions in this story. I kept looking at the cover like, “this is a middle grade?” I was legit laughing out loud in some places and I was wringing my hands in other places. I was also obviously doing the parent thing and sighing when I knew she was going to do something that she shouldn’t have done.
The characters were ok, but none of them were fully fleshed out. And Lordt her family was ANNOYING. Her mom was ridiculous. (And like who tf wants a mom that can do THAT?) And I’m not gonna lie, I wanted her to punch her sister lol She was terrible. And all because the two of them were like hiding their own shit. And like I GET IT, but also, WHYYYYYYY was that Paloma’s problem? She was just really upset about having to leave her old city with her family. I just really wanted to hug her and yell at everyone else for her. She just was trying to process her emotions as a kid lol
The narrator for this was really fun too. I have read/listened to a lot of books narrated by Frankie and I enjoyed them all. They were usually YA, but this one was MG and I was a little surprised by this. She sounded so young! She’s definitely amazing at her job, it’s no wonder she’s getting all the audiobooks! lol I hope she continues to bless us with her talent because I’m going to read them all!
This was a lot of fun! Like I said I really hope this is going to be a series. I can’t imagine the weird ass trouble she’s going to get herself in. I mean, come on, how much trouble do you really think a tween who can summon and talk to ghosts get into? A lot? That’s fair lmao I guess we’ll see soon!
Overall, I give this
