The Mortal War is over, and sixteen-year-old Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She’s training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And—most importantly of all—she can finally call Jace her boyfriend.
But nothing comes without a price.
Someone is murdering Shadowhunters, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second, bloody war. Clary’s best friend, Simon, can’t help her—his mother just found out that he’s a vampire, and now he’s homeless. When Jace begins to pull away from her without explaining why, Clary is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: she herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.
The stakes are higher than ever in the #1 New York Times bestselling fourth installment of the Mortal Instruments series.
*MY THOUGHTS*
Ok so after the last book I just KNEW this one was going to be amazing! I mean City of Glass was so good! But then when I started this one I must admit, I was a little disappointed. I can truthfully see why so many people say they feel they should have skipped it.
Shadowhunters are going missing. And when they finally do show up, they’re dead,,, And in a way that make them suspect Downworlders are responsible. But then an old friend from the Infernal Devices series comes and Simon is in trouble. At this time, so is Jace and Clary’s relationship. For reasons unknown to Clary, Jace isn’t acting the same, so of course she must figure out why.
So I wasn’t as impressed with this one because it fell into the dreaded “filler” sequel that I despise. It seemed like nothing was happening the whole book and then all of a sudden it was like WHAM all at once. To be honest while listening to the audio there were many times I felt myself falling asleep because I was that bored. (Probably didn’t help that I was doing homework at the time too but that’s beside the point.) But then at the end, it all hit me in the face. That kind of stuff just doesn’t work for me. Some could argue that it saves the book, but not always for me. I’m a FIRM believer of DNF’s and to have all the good stuff at the end just doesn’t make sense to me. What if I never got there to find out?
Another thing that was brought to my attention was the characters. I mean I already wasn’t a fan of Simon, but this one sealed the deal. You’ve been in love with your best friend as long as you’ve known her and got mad when she wanted someone else, but then you turn around and finally get a girlfriend and you start cheating on her?! Did you feel NOTHING when Clary was pining after Jace when y’all were together? Because I kind of feel like you should have fixed that a lot sooner. As for Clary, I still feel like she’s selfish. (I mean look at what that whole situation put into motion…) but she’s gotten a lot better. At least she’s training and listening to Shadowhunters and Luke now. I’e also noticed that she was starting to think like a Shadowhunter as well and not automatically jumping into action right away and making stupid decisions like she used to. As for Jace, I really felt sorry for him. I hate that he’s going through this. I also really hate that the person who is putting him through this is back. I’m really hoping that he’s strong enough to get over this. I need you to be regular again Jace lol
After reading this I can honestly say that I wasn’t impressed. It wasn’t bad, I just don’t feel like this was the right one to put after something good as City of Glass. Even still, I’m still intrigued enough to wait for my turn at the library for City of Lost Souls.
Overall, I give this
(Real rating 2.5. I rounded up!)
