September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. What role have libraries played in your reading journey? Do you have any recommendations for books or fond recollections involving libraries??
I’m a librarian, so I think they’ve played a pretty huge part lmao I love my job and I really don’t think I would be happier anywhere else. I currently am the person who is responsible for buying the books that go in the library and in my favorite age category, so I’m very happy with my career choice.
Other than that, libraries have still impacted me in a way I never saw coming. I became an audiobook girlie because of the library. I said I would listen to one for free from there after promising someone I knew that I would try it but I wouldn’t promise to like it. I was stubborn and was determined not to because I was too set in my old ways of reading with my eyeballs. But then I found out accidentally that you could speed up the narrator and that I could still read and still do other things like work and the laundry and that was all she wrote. Ever since Libby has become my bestie. She’s the reason I don’t leave the house without my AirPods lol
As for fond recollections, besides graduating with my Masters degree, I also remember telling my mom at 5 I wanted to work in the library when I grew up. Most kids say a doctor or lawyer or something. But I definitely said I wanted to work in the library. And now, HERE I AM. I also remember going with my mom to like storytime and other library programs, who would then take me to Dairy Queen. It was then where I first fell in love with mint ice cream. (I used to get the mint oreo blizzard lol)

Nice! I expected something like this from you! 😉 I would’ve loved to work in a library as well, but I didn’t realize at the time that there was a whole area of education for this. Wondering if that’s why I never got called for job interviews when I applied for positions. I would’ve thought my English degree could’ve been a good second choice but maybe not. Oh well, it can always be a pipe dream for later in life perhaps! Great response!

Ok so there are other jobs in the library that you can get, like circ or shelver, etc. But to get the title of librarian, yes, you have to get an MLIS. Those are the classes that show you how to find things and the best resources. So while your English degree is good for the book side, there’s the whole reference side that they’d still teach you with the degree. If that makes sense.
