Small towns are nothing if not friendly. Friendship, Wisconsin (population: 688) is no different. Around here, everyone wears a smile. And no one ever locks their doors. Until, that is, high school sweetheart Ruth Fried is found murdered. Strung up like a scarecrow in the middle of a cornfield.
Unfortunately, Friendship’s police are more adept at looking for lost pets than catching killers. So Ruth’s best friend, Kippy Bushman, armed with only her tenacious Midwestern spirit and Ruth’s secret diary (which Ruth’s mother had asked her to read in order to redact any, you know, sex parts), sets out to find the murderer. But in a quiet town like Friendship—where no one is a suspect—anyone could be the killer.

*MY THOUGHTS*

After reading so many reviews about this book I was a little skeptical. There were many times when I took it off my TBR pile, just to add it back on. But finally it came out and my librarian said they added an e-book copy just for me (I requested one) and I quickly downloaded it.

“‘The hardest thing to get through to yourself about death is also the most obvious thing: that the person is really gone.

Going in I had to keep reminding myself that this book wasn’t just a thriller, but a comedic thriller. I’ve never read anything categorized as that before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Especially since I wasn’t sure just HOW weird everything was going to be. But geez, let me just tell you, this was one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read lol From Kippy’s awkwardness, to the other characters dialogue, to the way everyone in that small town, everyone was just ridiculous. So many times I found myself laughing out loud.

“‘…I wish I didn’t even wear pants, I wish society didn’t condone it.

Kippy was one of the weirdest characters I’ve ever read about. Her little euology was well…. Umm yeah let’s just say it wasn’t normal lol And then there was her dad. Yeah he was over the top weird. Like why in the world would you call your child Pimple? I understand they live in a small town, but I do too and this is nothing like our town. We may be weird, but we don’t act like that.

“‘You’d be surprised at how many wrong turns you can take in a ventilation system when you’re on drugs.”

As far as the plot, there is so much going on. It wasn’t hard to keep track of, but it was hard to like really understand. So many things happened where you were like what? There was back story in the middle of the actual story and it made it hard to decipher through. It felt like it was info-dumping.

“‘Regular ride or a getaway car?

But I normally judge thrillers on if I can figure out who the killer is. And this one I definitely couldn’t. I think I might have been able to if I had been actually paying attention, but I was way to distracted by all the weird stuff that was going on. It took the sptlight off the mystery and I ignored it until it actually came to light. And when I finally realized who the killer was, I was finding out with Kippy. And clearly by then it was too late.

“‘I focus on my feet, Dom once said that if you’re nervous, thinking about your feet is a good way to ground yourself.

This book wasn’t anything like I was expecting, but it turned out to be a good read. For the longest I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not, But in the end, with all its weirdness and kookiness, it was ok. I enjoyed it, and I’m glad I read it to form my own opinion instead of just not reading it because of its previous reviews.

Overall, I give this

  1. I've heard several mixed things about this one. Kippy definitely sounds pretty weird. I'm glad you thought it was a good read overall, though! Great review 🙂
