These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!
Today’s Theme: Spirited Suspects!
Cheerleaders are some of the most overlooked athletes. They’re often infantilized and just seen as the bubbly, cheerful, sometimes ditzy girl/woman that’s there to cheer their team to victory. But what happens when they’re accused of a crime? Are they still the same person you had in mind? In this one, the main character is a cheerleader who is accused of schmurdering her ex-best friend and her boyfriend because they were cheating. To make it worse, the accuser posted that on social media. But she didn’t do it. So now she has to clear her name by doing the job the cops won’t do since they’re already blaming her too. You really don’t know who to blame in this book lol At one point I was blaming her too. So someone read this and let me know what your final guess was lol
This one had a cheerleader as a suspect too. One of the cheerleaders on Jonty’s team has been killed. A string of unfortunate clues has guided the police right to Jonty’s door. The only person who has her back is her best friend. Jonty’s late mother was also a cheerleader on this very squad and Jonty has just been trying her best to make sure she can live up to what her mother expected. And she was not expecting Jonty to be the number one suspect in a murder case. Since this happened a detective has been following her around, she’s been getting into fights with other squads and they have been acting like she was this sinister cheerleader who is doing all of these things to her squad. This book kept me on my toes. Not only was I trying to keep up with the mystery, but I was also trying to keep up with the actual cheerleading part. This is the first book I’ve read where they did actual competitive cheerleading. Y’all know I love a good sports story and this one was so good!
