For Readers of: Audio, Contemporary, Contemporary Romance, Sparkly Cover, LOL, Most Anticipated, Own, Racial/Ethnic Diversity, Realistic Fiction, Rivals to Lovers, Romance, YAA girl pledges revenge on her school’s playboy—only to start falling for him—in this hilarious teen rom-com perfect for classics like John Tucker Must Die and Clueless.
There’s no one teenage filmmaker Wren hates more than notorious playboy Beckett Lane. Girls love him because of his famous dad, and Beckett revels in the unearned attention. It seems like everyone is under his spell but Wren—including Wren’s sweet, naive sister Kennedy, who has a huge crush on him.
When Beckett humiliates Kennedy in front of the entire school, Wren swears to bring him down once and for all by teaming up with her BFF Chelsie to make a documentary showing everybody exactly who he really is. They launch an investigation meant to expose him, which includes Wren cozying up to Beckett to get inside information—because she’s the only one in school not susceptible to the Beckett Effect.
Only, as she gets closer to Beckett, Wren wonders if the line between love and hate is as obvious as she thought it was. Could there be more to the school’s biggest playboy than she realized?
*MY THOUGHTS*
I couldn’t wait to write this review. I was so excited and shocked to see that she had written a YA book, so I immediately put it on my TBR. And just like in her MG books, she did not disappoint.
Ok so the main thing that stood out was the humor. She is just as hilarious in her YA as she is in her MG. Because why did I hear the narrator say, “dragon side piece?” LOL I laughed through that whole book. Jones definitely brought her signature writing style with this one and I couldn’t have liked it more.
The characters were really weird tho. Idk if this is a spoiler, but the FMC was annoying. She didn’t know what the word accountability meant. Literally everything was blamed on someone else. She legit learned nothing that whole time. Then there was her sister. I wanted to tell her, STAND UP! Like this girl was so unhinged she was putting the thought of revenge in the way of her grades. And again, literally no one was telling her no! I was so annoyed with her LOL I think what got me the most tho was her sister. She was infantilizing her and then getting mad that she was talking/fighting back.
The romance was cute. I knew where it was headed immediately, but I think that was part of their magic. I was worried af about that other person tho. It was a weird ass love triangle and I actually hated who it was between. But I thought they were a really sweet couple once they got out of their own way. (Side note, I’m still waiting on my husband to send me on a date like Beckett gave her LOL)
All in all I enjoyed this book. Nashae Jones can write a book! I had a lot of fun with this one. I was happy to see how Beckett proved her wrong many times during this book. She needed someone to bring her back down to Earth, and I was glad he did it and got to prove himself in the end as well.
Overall, I give this
