For Readers Interested In: 2sLGBTQ+, Sparkly Covers, Most Anticipated, Racial/Ethnic Diversity, Realistic Fiction, Stand-alone, Thriller, YAA teen investigative podcaster decides to dig into the truth behind a grisly murder spree that rocked his hometown five years ago, but soon discovers that this cold case is still hiding deadly secrets—in this chilling thriller perfect for fans of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Five years ago, the infamous Trojan murders turned the small town of Moss Pointe, Louisiana into a living nightmare. Four teen boys—all star players on Moss Pointe High’s football team—were murdered one after the other by a Trojan-mask wearing killer.
Eventually, the murderer was unmasked. But the community has never forgotten—and some folks in town still wonder whether the police got it right.
Eighteen-year-old Pryce Cummings is one of them. An aspiring journalist, Pryce is pretty sure he just stumbled upon evidence that throws the killer’s guilt into question. It’s the perfect story for his own podcast, and a reason to go back to the hometown he’s avoided since coming to terms with his sexuality while at college.
But in Moss Pointe, digging into the past is anything but welcome. There’s so much more to what happened in there five years ago, and Pryce is ready to crack it all wide open . . . if he lives to tell the tale.
*MY THOUGHTS*
This was nothing like I was expecting. I really had no idea what was going on for most of this book. And let me just say I loved that lol This is definitely my favorite Emill book.
Ok so the characters were my favorite part. They seemed so real. Like it was a true crime show or something. The way Pryce was struggling with keeping his own secrets while also trying to out everyone else’s was crazy. But as someone else who did Mass Communications, I know exactly what that’s like. I related to him in so many ways. I also thought he was pretty brave. He was going back to this place, talking to people about the murders that none of them really wanted to bring back up. There’s no way I could have done that and I’m 37 lol He wasn’t playing with them and I don’t blame him for wanting to get justice. No matter the reason.
So the mystery was so good. I loved that he was approaching it as a reporter. It really helped him give the appearance that he could remain unbiased. (We both know he was biased. That’s why he fought so hard to try to prove that someone else did it) I keep saying mystery tho because it didn’t seem to be thrilling until it got closer to the end. So, yes, I would still classify it as a thriller, but it doesn’t get cray cray until the almost end. As for whodunit, I had no freaking clue. I figured it out as soon as he did lol I’m not sure if that was the way he wrote it or if I was just too into the story to try harder to figure it out. And if you know me and the amount of times I can guess who it was, you know this made me happy af to have gotten it wrong. There IS something else that I got right, but I was pissed to have gotten that right.
I never expect to cry from a thriller, but this one almost got me. I got a little teary in a couple places. And that’s when I knew I loved this. This book made me feel so much. I swear I say this all the time when i find a book like this, but it’s true. I got pissed, I got intrigued by what he was trying to find out, I got excited when he was making leeway, I got disgusted when some things were outed. It was a really like an emotional, jaw dropping roller coaster from the beginning to the end.
This was so good. I think this one is better than his debut. Definitely my favorite book of his so far. But , ummmmm, what am i supposed to do now until his next book?!
Overall, I give this
