These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!

Today’s Theme: Back to School! (HBCU Edition)
It’s August so you know what that means! Us public librarians are OFF and we’re sending you kiddos back to their teachers. (Hopefully they’ve been enjoying Summer Reading.) But this year, my back to school post is for the adults. With a focus on those who went or are on their way to start at HBCUs. This first one is an anthology that has so many great authors in it. And they’re all HBCU alum. I’ve only read one story so far in this, but that was enough to pre-order my copy lol As someone who went to a PWI I want to live vicariously through this book. And I mean I want to live every life at every school in this book lol AND this is edited by THE EBony LaDelle?! Yeah I already love this. (Fun fact, I wanted to get my PhD from an HBCU but then Dump happened and yeah. Idk if I’ll be able to afford to go back to school again.)
This one is another collection, but this one is a collection of essays. It’s non-fiction. I just got my hold in for this one, but so far I’ve liked it a lot. Since this one has other holds on it I started reading it first. And so far, there’s so many different perspectives and I love that. There’s so many differences even within these schools and I love that. I also love the look into our culture that you get with each of these stories. And the community. One thing I’ve learned from reading up on HBCUs, is the family they’ve made while there. Andd while I found my tribe at a PWI, I can guarantee it would have been nothing to have an entire school as my tribe. So again, I’m living vicariously through this book too lol
Well, there you go! Here I’m just going to talk about why I grouped these two books together. I hope you enjoyed a look at this small part of the books. For a full synopsis of the book or to add it to your TBR, click the picture and it will take you to their Storygraph. The link on the caption will take you to it’s Goodreads.
More HBCUs to Choose!

I couldn’t decide which one of these to use, so I just put most of them on this slide. These can all be found on KU. If you’re looking for more books set at HBCUs, please visit here. I hope y’all go pick one (or all of them) up. I just downloaded the Monica Walters one!

What about you? Did you go to an HBCU? Or just wish you did like me? Have you read any of these? Let me know in the comments!
