Two for Tuesday: Culture in Horror!

These themes will vary! It could be based off of some book mail I just received, pop culture, something personal to me, a headline from the news, a trend I noticed when I was buying books for my library system, etc. I hope you stick around to see all the themes and book recs I come up with!

Today’s Theme: Culture in Horror!

One thing I love is diverse literature. Even more than that, I love to see diverse lit in my favorite genres. And horror is one of them. In this one, La Cegua is written into a modern horror story. The legend varies across Central America, but it always features a woman with the head of a horse. This story focuses on the Nicaraguan version. I cannot WAIT to get my hands on this! I had never heard of La Cegua before, so this is going to not only teach me but also scare me lol How am I supposed to wait until February of 2025? It sounds absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to learn more about the La Cegua, the creepy woods, and those wishes that are about to get the main characters in trouble!

Hungry Bones by Louise Hung

In this one, Hungry Ghosts are written into a paranormal ghost story. Hungry ghost legends are also varied across Asian cultures. In the Chinese/Buddhist legends, they represent beings who are driven by intense emotional needs in an animalistic way. And really that was all I needed to hear about this one lol I have heard about Hungry Ghosts before, but I never went and did any research on them, so this is going to be interesting. And the synopsis of this is even creepy, the main character is a ghost seer and the ghost has been trying to get someone to help her figure out why she’s trapped in this house. And look at this cover! It’s a MG book too! I just got my hold in and I can’t wait to start!

Also, as a shameless plug, I’ve been interested in stories like these for a LONG TIME. I’ve read or been interested in so many that I made them into a list for everyone to enjoy! Here’s a list that I made last year for my library system! Cultures and legends vary.

Well, there you go! Here I’m just going to talk about why I grouped these two books together. I hope you enjoyed a look at this small part of the books. For a full synopsis of the book or to add it to your TBR, click the picture and it will take you to their Storygraph. The link on the caption will take you to it’s Goodreads.

It’s Scary Season! Are you ready for Halloween? Do you like to see different cultural aspects in the books you read? Have you ever read a horror novel that represents your culture? Let me know in the comments! (Basically I need the titles so I can read it lol)
