Summer Reading Recs 2024: Adventure Begins at Your Library!

Summer Reading is upon us! Well almost for us anyway lol (Today we’re letting people start signing up and then on June 3rd it begins!) And Almost every year since I started at the library I’ve been sharing some book recs and display ideas that match the summer reading theme that CLSP has made for the US branches. (It may be different for your library if your library system makes up their own!) I think my most favorite was Libraries Rock. That book rec list I made for it was off the charts! (Pun intended) The next year I did a sci fi science themed one and that one was actually fun as well. I skipped 2020 because I wasn’t sure if we we’re going to have a Summer Reading Program, BUT I got back to it in 2021! For whatever reason I skipped 2 of the best themes from the last two years, and I said I won’t let that happen to me again! So here we are lmao

As y’all know tho, I’m not at the branches anymore, so these are just some display ideas if you need them. OR if you are doing a reading challenge with books that fit the theme, you can hopefully make these count for that as well. So, without further ado…. Here we go!:

MG/YA Camp Books:

I have so many more in YA lol Summer is my favorite season and I LOVE any and all things going on with them. I can’t write this list without mentioning The Box in the Woods by Maureen Johnson, Dead Girls Walking by Sami Ellis, & The Counselors by Jessica Goodman. And I KNOW I haven’t read Two Sides yet, but I’ve heard it’s another camp slasher, and if you know me, you know slashers are my favorite sub-genre of horror (I can literally watch Halloween, Scream, I Know What you Did Last Summer, and Friday the 13th in December or February lol) So, if there’s anymore camp slashers out, there GIVE THEM TO ME NOW! And there’s another camp about vampires that I haven’t read that reminds me of Camp Sylvania.

MG/YA Quest Books:

Again, there’s so many more, but I included 2 books that I’ve read and 2 I haven’t in both age groups. So basically I’m telling y’all so I can take my own advice and read them soon lol

MG/YA Wilderness Survival Books:

I have no excuse for these other than the fact that I was trying to think outside of the box. Please let me know if this is stupid or you don’t think it will work. I chose this since all of these characters are trying to figure out how to survive in the great outdoors.

It Waits in the Woods MG/YA Books:

This is just a random one, but I think surviving a horror in the woods would be an adventure all its on. Especially if there’s running through the woods from something and all that.

MG/YA books set Outside the USA (Where I’m at!)

I had a few more topics that I was thinking about, like climate justice and pirates since they roam the seas, but I don’t actually like pirate books lol I think I’ve read maybe 3 ever. There is so much more out there too! Be creative and show it off!

So what do you think? Have you read any of these? Will you add them to your TBR? Some of them aren’t out until later, but please, let me know what you think!
