Top 10 Genre Freebie – YA Romance Tropes and Book Recs to Go With Them

Friends to Lovers: Reggie and Delilah’s Year of Falling by Elise Bryant- Listen, I’m so glad the strike is over because I am super glad I can talk about this book again! The way they find each other is SO. CUTE. And Reggie’s reaction to her was so visceral. I was cheering them on from the very beginning! Once they turned into friends, I knew where it was going. And I loved it!

Enemies to Lovers: Seoulmates by Susan Lee- I am not a fan of this trope, but I liked this. But man, I only like the MMC lol The FMC was so mean. Everyone was expected to give her a chance to change, but she didn’t give them that same chance.

Meet Cute- How to Excavate a Heart by Jake Maia Arlow- Listen this book may not be my favorite, but the fact that her mom and her actually almost hit the girl she ends up liking it hilarious to me lol

Forbidden Love: When You Wish Upon a Lantern by Gloria Chao- Cutest book I’ve read in a long time! I LOVED this. And the amount of culture that I learned about from this? I loved it! But the miscommunication trope went on a bit too long. But the forbidden love and them fighting against what their dads were saying? CHEF’S KISS.

Fake Dating: This Time It’s Real by Ann Liang- This was cute! Y’all know fake dating is my jam, so I was ruthless on critiquing this while I read. But I did like it. A lot more than I expected to.

The Girl Who Doesn’t Believe in Love: Love Radio by Ebony LaDelle- OF COURSE I HAD TO ADD THIS SOMEWHERE ON HERE. This trope is often times used for like fantasy romance, but as soon as I remembered about this trope I realized this fit and it was perfect.

Secret Relationship: Home Field Advantage by Dahlia Adler- This is different (well to me anyway lol) Where a Forbidden Romance deals with family members and others, I think this one is where they’re just keeping it a secret from everyone. Not for a specific reason, but just because they want to keep it a specific reason. And that’s what happens here. I loved this one, but is it bad because I only liked Jack? lol

Love Triangle: The Davenports by Krystal Marquis- Maybe this is a load of spoilers, but man I really think this is the only one I’ve ever actually liked? And it’s not like anything panned out in the end anyway. I’ll have to wait until next year and it’s going to DRIVE ME CRAZY.

Love Triangle: The Love Match by Priyanka Taslim- Again I’m not a huge fan of the love triangle, but I can admit it’s ok when it’s an integral part of the plot. And this one definitely is.

Rich Partner: The Feeling of Falling in Love by Mason Deaver- When I saw this trope I just knew there wasn’t a YA romance that this was about. And then I went through my Read list on Storygraph and OMG this fit perfectly. Well not really. They continuously say it’s their mom’s money, but they still use it on their partner soooooo I thought it was ok enough lol

What about you? Have you read any of these? Would you agree to any of these? Let me know in the comments!
