For fans of: Realistic Fiction, Second Chance Romance, Black Romance, Sparkly Cover, Contemporary Romance, AdultThey got everything they wanted…but never had each other.
Touré Wallace and Niomi Spencer were close friends at Finley College, the prestigious HBCU they attended. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. Both chased their dreams of grit and glamor as high-profile journalists. They got it all…except a shot at being more than friends.
Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America’s most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing. When their alma mater recruits its most famous alums for an interview during homecoming, every look, every touch is electric. The air hums with what could have been, and they’re tempted by what they could have right now, if only for one weekend. Have they traveled the world, chasing something special, when all it took was coming home?
Featuring Southern University’s marching band, Human Jukebox!
BETWEEN THE COVERS!
*This book is part of the new adult contemporary romance genre! It is more mature than YA. I have featured it in Between the Covers as a way to feature the few Adult and New Adult titles I am beginning to read!”
*MY THOUGHTS*
Was I a little biased because the HBCU featured is one that I wanted to go to but it was out of state? Yes. Was I even more biased because I wanted to be in the band that’s featured in this book because my band director from high school was from there? Also yes. But did none of that matter because Kennedy Ryan is THAT girl? The FINAL YES. So, yes, yes to all of this. From the band to the book to the author.
Ok so the characters were the best part. I LOVED literally everyone. Everyone had their own part to play and they played it well. I was invested in everyone’s business. I did wish that we explored the daughter’s feelings a bit more, but I had to remind myself that this wasn’t her story. This story was for her dad and how he found love again. But I still wish since she was included in the plot it was a little bit more about her.
As for the romance, I DID wish there was more…. But maybe because I just was expecting there to be more of an umph because it was so short. So in case you’re wondering, there’s no smut, but the romance is a sweet one. I also was a little annoyed with the ending. I wanted her to possibly expand on this story, but I guess it won’t happen now because she laid it all out there at at the end . I wanted more and I will forever ask if there will be more from them? Maybe a deleted scene or something? Idk, but I will ask
The story itself was cute. And for it to be so short I was pretty impressed with how Ryan was able to get me so invested. The story itself was actually pretty cute. I could really see the two of them falling for each other. They were really cute. I did think it could have had a little more romance since it was so short. It seemed like only the last 10 minutes they were together. It spent a lot of time setting up the story instead of just heading to the romance. If that makes sense.
The band thing was pretty cool. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like that where there was a live band in it before. (And by band I mean marching band) It was a pretty cool concept. It really made the HBCU vibes a little more lit. Especially to someone who came from a PWI but always wanted to go to an HBCU. This is also why the setting was so lit to me. I’m in a Greek org, so I was imaging my Homecoming life and multiplying it by 2. I know theirs is crazy lol I was a little jealous. But that’s besides the point. Kennedy Ryan made it sound like a good time and I was happy to “visit” the campus while I read.
The audio performance was amazing as always. Two of my favorite narrators did this book and being for real, there is no way I could give them alone less than stars. Them paired with Kennedy Ryan’s words made this an automatic favorite for me. I really wish it had been longer. Or at the very least that I had listened to it slower. They truly made this an enjoyable experience.
Basically it was a joy to read this. I was on the fence about keeping my audible account before this, but if they keep making bangers like this, I’ll be keeping it. I wanted a bit more romance, but then again, it was only 2 hours and I had sped it up. So maybe it’s just a me thing. Because other than that, I just wanted to shout “Go Read It” at you and hope that would be enough for a review.
