From Julie Murphy, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dumplin’, comes the first in a two-book origin story of Faith, a groundbreaking, plus-sized superhero from the Valiant Entertainment comics.
Faith Herbert is a pretty regular teen. When she’s not hanging out with her two best friends, Matt and Ches, she’s volunteering at the local animal shelter or obsessing over the long-running teen drama The Grove.
So far, her senior year has been spent trying to sort out her feelings for her maybe-crush Johnny and making plans to stay close to Grandma Lou after graduation. Of course, there’s also that small matter of recently discovering she can fly….
When the fictional world of The Grove crashes into Faith’s reality as the show relocates to her town, she can’t believe it when TV heroine Dakota Ash takes a romantic interest in her.
But her fandom-fueled daydreams aren’t enough to distract Faith from the fact that first animals, then people, have begun to vanish from the town. Only Faith seems able to connect the dots to a new.

*MY THOUGHTS*

I’m down to read any origin story of a superhero, and then when I saw it was written by Julie Murphy, I knew I had to have it. I had not heard of Faith Herbert before, but you can bet I had to find out more about her after reading this!

Faith was a normal kid….. Until she realizes she can fly. So now she’s trying her hardest to hide this from her friends while still being a regular teen. But then Faith finds that one of her idols from her favorite show of all time has now moved to her hometown. And she’s showing interest in Faith! But then dogs, and then girls start missing. So far only Faith has been the only one who realized anything that’s happened.

Let’s start with the characters. I loved Faith even though she did abandon her friends when there was a love interest involved. I did want to see more of how she became that way. They gave us a small glimpse of it in the beginning and then told us the story in the end, but I just didn’t understand why we couldn’t get the entire story of her time at camp. Like all the things she did and how she got in that situation. Guess I’ll have to go and find a comic and read that.

The one thing I didn’t care for was the plot. There were so many different stories going on in this book. And as someone who was listening to this, it was hard to listen to and make sure I got them all right. I found myself having to re-listen to some parts again.

As for the narrator, I really liked her. I haven’t listened to any of her other works, so this was a first. I did enjoy it though. I felt her emotions in her reading and I liked that. Especially when she was depicting an excited teen when she realized who Dakota was lol She did a great job!

This book was very cute! And the ending left it open for readers to figure out what book 2 might be about. I can’t wait to find out if we’re right. I’ll definitely be reading some Faith comics before I get my hands on the next one!

Overall, I give this

Have you read this? Do you like superhero origin stories? Did you hear about Faith Herbert before this book? Let me know in the comments!
