The Dark Elements, #1
For fans of: Paranormal Romance, Gargoyles, Young Adult
One kiss could be the last
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.
Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.
Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.
But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.
*MY THOUGHTS*
When I had the chance to read this, I was in the middle of a book slump. I grabbed the chance because I knew that JLA can always cure a book slump. And then, after reading
Bitter Sweet Love, I was super excited about it! And trust me, it was worth it!
“After all, Hell has had its eyes on you for quite some time.“
pg. 88 (ARC)
The characters in this were amazing. I loved the way they shifted, the way they fought, and the way they interacted with each other. It was cool to see how even though they were all non-human, they all had human emotions. They fell in love, they despised certain people, and they were so jealous all the time. Seeing as you’re dealing with Wardens and demons, you could see how that would be a big thing to mention.
“People with the purest souls are capable of the greatest evils.“
pg. 127 (ARC)
I also loved the EPIC fight scenes. If there’s two things JLA knows, its super swoony boys and EPIC battles. And throughout the entire book its sprinkled with those kinds of battles. They had me on the edge of my seat wondering how the character would live. And that last one….. Dude, I hated that that ONE thing happened. I felt so bad. For both of them. I was literally stunned. So be advised, this will leave you with no nails and hair that you’ve torn out lol
“The Seeker, the zombie, and the possessed… that sounds like the start of a really bad joke, doesn’t it?“
pg. 192 (ARC)
Lastly, this wouldn’t be a JLA book without the romance and the swoony boy! There are two boys in this one, one of which is a demon so he’s off limits and the other which is a Warden so he’s basically off limits too. (Now that I really think about it, Layla’s love life sucked lol) But the most swoony is Roth. Yes Roth the demon. It sounds crazy, but he’s not all bad. You’ll understand down the road. Trust me.
“There has to be good and bad in the world. There has to be choice.“
pg. 261 (ARC)
In short, here’s another great JLA book! It had all her signature things: a great heroine, a cool paranormal creature, a swoony boy, and the epic fighting. Trust me, its another one that you don’t want to miss!
Overall, I give this
Oh awesome review! Dying to read this one! Even signed up for Amazon Prime for the fastest delivery possible! And alas, it still won't come til Thursday of next week. Sob.
But anyway great review! Glad to keep reading positive things about this one! I Love JLA's books! And gargoyles are freaking awesome, so happy to have the two combined!
For some reason my computer/internet is being picky. What did you rate this? I cannot see your rating pic and just wanted to know what level of awesome you gave it.
And again, great review!
