TTT: Book Turn-Offs

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. Each week we will post a new Top Ten list. Everyone is welcome to join.

This week’s topic is:
Top 10  Book Turn-Offs
*These are in no particular order.

1. Insta-Love/Love triangles: Don’t have your characters meet and automatically fall in love. Make it feel real. Don’t force it. And please, let me have just a few reads where he/she knows who she wants to talk to from the very beginning.

2. Over done Cliches: Please, someone find the parents of all the YA teens out there. Just saying, I’m pretty sure EVERYONE’S parents aren’t always gone and letting you run amok.

3. Info dumps: I don’t need to know EVERYTHING about your story at one time.

4. Trying to hard to sound young like your character: Dude, like omg don’t try and like sound like your about 15 mmmk? You almost ALWAYS make your character sound like an idiot. (Also please don’t make your 16 year old characters sound like they’re in their 30’s.)

5. Ugly covers: Shallow I know, but I’m more likely to pick up something with a cover like These Broken Stars vs something with a cover like Twilight… Just saying…
These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1) vs Twilight (Twilight, #1)
6. Girl loses the boy and basically shuts down: I’m pretty sure you had SOME kind of life without him smh (And yes I got this idea after thinking about Twilight lol)
7. No swoony times: I know its bad, but I am QUICK to drop a book if there’s not enough swoony times for me. The main reason I wanted to give the book a chance is because I wanted someone to fall in LOVE.
8. Bad world building: I’m a “visual: reader. I like to be able to see images in my mind as I’m reading. I do not want to just see the characters walking around doing things. Please, let me into their world. Let me know what its like to be where they are. (Why do you think my blog’s name is TAKE ME AWAY!!!!)
9. A really good villain: I’m pretty sure that was an oxymoron lol But you all know what I mean. In a paranormal read, I need someone that even I fear. Like the Doctor from All Our Yesterdays
10. Turning a perfectly good stand-alone to a series: (Ex. All Our Yesterdays) “This can also be read: “DRAGGINGGGGGGG  a series out.”(The Mortal Instruments series. I’ve heard that it would have been fine to end at 3, but noooo it goes on all the way until book 6! With about 392529357y8674158 other books set in the VERY SAME WORLD.) But in case you hadn’t noticed…. I miss a lot of sequels. And if I do, going beyond 2 or 3 is very hard work. Some series I still need to finish are: Endlessly (Paranormalcy, #3) by Kiersten White; Boundless (Unearthly, #3) by Cynthia Hand, The Elite (The Selection, #2) by Kiera Cass, and many, many more smh

  1. #8 YES! I'm a very visual person and I like to 'see' and get lost in the world as well. Drives me bananas when the author glazes over things, or info dumps into a paragraph and that's all we get. Great list!

  2. my biggest book turn off is cheating

  3. Great answers! I definitely agree with you on many of them. I hate it when YA books try to be all "with the time" by using horrible lingo. It makes it feel so immature.
    Thanks for stopping by!
